10 New Places for Your Ice Cream Fix
2014-12-18
new ice cream places singapore
On this sunny island of ours, it’s always a good time for that cool, icy treat in the sweltering heat. And even after sunset, ice cream becomes part of the after-dinner dessert routine. In recent months, we’ve been seeing more and more neighbourhood ice cream parlours popping up. Here are 10 of the newer ones that you should visit:
1. Ice Queen
ice queen
Ice Queen serves freshly made ice cream using liquid nitrogen, which eliminates chemicals and additives from ice crystals that form when ice cream takes too long to freeze, making it smoother and creamier to taste. Take your pick from premium flavours such as Gula Melaka and Sea Salt Caramel, familiar ones like Chendol or quirkily named delectable specialties like Let’s Go To The Movies, which were inspired from the owner’s personal experiences. If you are a fan of Thailand’s Mango Sticky Rice, you are bound to fall for their take on the famous dessert. Rich, tangy sweet and sprinkled with fried mung beans, it tastes just like the real deal. 217 East Coast Road, Singapore 428915
2. Momolato
momolato
Short for “More More Gelato”, Momolato gives dessert seekers a healthier variety to choose from. The ice cream parlour features over 16 gourmet gelatos and ten homemade artisan popsicles – all free from artificial colouring and preservatives. Bestsellers include the Mount Mao Mao, which has bits of real durian and OL Baileys, where the cream-based liqueur meets the richness of butterscotch. The zesty Kimelon Sorbets are made with fresh fruits and flavours change weekly for a good variety. As it is located on university grounds, Momolato’s prices are kept low despite being in the heart of town. 3. Twenty Grammes
twenty grammes
Opened less than a month ago, this hole-in-the-wall ice cream parlour sports a chic black storefront with a vibrantly coloured interior. For coffee lovers, one spoonful of the Affogato ice cream will only leave you wanting more. The Matcha is divine as well – not too sweet with an extra chewy factor with the added bits of mocha. Service-wise, staff are friendly and would be willing to let you try any of their homemade specialties. Apart from their usual waffles and ice cream, Twenty Grammes also offers a selection of tarts, cakes and pies. Noteworthy picks include the Benoffee Pie and Hazelnut Dacquiose – both from Windowsill Pies. 753 North Bridge Road, Singapore 198721
4. Seriously Ice Cream
seriously ice cream
Unlike its competitors, Seriously Ice Cream features a vintage retail shop. Items on display range from eclectic handbags, old-school sunglasses and even an interesting selection of books. Their signature flavours include Miso Gula Melaka, Lychee Rose and Teh C. According to the owner, he rotates these flavours occasionally to keep things fresh. Pair their waffles with ice cream, or even with ham and cheese if you are craving something savoury. Getting here is not a hassle, as it is located a few minutes away from Outram Park MRT station. Also, do note that they only accept cash here. 4 Everton Park, Singapore 080004
5. Rabbit Owl Depot
rabbit owl depot
In this brightly lit and homely space situated just opposite the National Library, you’ll find traces of rabbit and owl themed décor amongst intricate ornaments and coasters – certainly following close to its name. Besides the décor, what makes this café special is its uniquely shaped snowflake Waffles served with a scoop of ice cream, priced at $9.50. For the perfect complement to your dessert, go for a smooth and creamy Flat White or Affogato. 420 North Bridge Road, Singapore 188727
6. Holy Cow Creamery

Popular amongst residents in the North is this newly opened café that offers quality homemade ice cream. From $2.90 per scoop, you can enjoy crowd favourites such as Honeycomb, Miss Saigon and Mr Potato Head – each featuring a bold mix of ingredients. Forget cups, cones and waffles here and have your ice cream sandwiched in a classic bread style. For non-coffee lovers, Holy Cow Creamery has a variety of Gryphon Tea, Float and Fizzes on the menu. And while the shop can get a little cramped after office hours, its ambience makes for the perfect location to chill at and catch up with friends. 7. Little Ice Cream Kafe
little ice cream kafe
Known as LICK in short, this ice cream shop found along Tanjong Katong Road might look nothing out of the ordinary from the outside, but step right in and let its whimsical interior impress you. With over thirty homemade flavours to choose from, the range includes usual suspects like Chocolate and Strawberry, as well as more familiar local flavours like Teh Tarik, Pulot Hitam and Kaya Toast. For a heftier dessert, pair your scoops with their crispy and buttery waffles. In addition, thanks to its close proximity to schools, this popular hangout for teens and families on weekends keeps its prices reasonable and wallet friendly. 258 Tanjong Katong Road, Singapore 437460
8. The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream

As featured in October’s New Bites, The Milky Way Homemade Ice Cream is Tanglin Halt’s newest ice cream parlour, owned by ex-Campus Superstar alumni Renfred Ng and his family. The Earl Grey ice cream definitely holds its ground as one of the more popular flavours here with its rich and distinctive earl grey taste. Another favourite of ours is the Strawberry Cheesecake, which tastes similar to the actual cake with biscuit crumbs hidden within. The only downside: Flavours are limited and all milk-based (which explains the shop’s name), so fans of fruity sorbets may be up for slight disappointment. Blk 48 Tanglin Halt Road, Singapore 142048
9. Sunday Folks
sunday folks
Sister branch to the highly acclaimed Creamier, Sunday Folks in Holland Village, is no stranger to dessert lovers in Singapore. Serving mainly six flavours of heavenly soft serve ice cream, bestsellers include Sea Salt Gula Melaka, Roasted Pistachio and Earl Grey Lavender ($7.20 each). Each ice cream concoction comes with special handcrafted toppings to choose from but are best paired with freshly baked, fluffy Belgian waffles ($11.80) for that extra crunch. While Sunday Folks has far more seats and space compared to its predecessor, waiting time can get particularly long during the weekends. Head over early to avoid squeezing with the crowd and do take note that they only open from 4pm on weekdays. Image: Openrice user hazelleo 44 Jalan Merah Saga, Singapore 278116
10. Fanny Ice Cream Singapore
fanny ice cream
Touted as Vietnam’s most successful ice cream chain, Fanny offers a good selection of fruity flavoured sorbets and innovative Asian flavours. Specialties include the Chilli Chocolate, which has a rich, creamy dark chocolate flavour with a spicy aftertaste and Coffee Chocolate that smells like authentic Vietnamese Coffee. If you have that extra buck to splurge, go on and indulge in the Secret Spiral (pictured), which comes in an interesting combo of vanilla and cookies ice cream, assorted berries and whipped cream on top. 99 East Coast Road, Singapore 428795
